Use of Information Obtained by onedegree

When you register to use onedegree.com, you create your own profile and privacy settings. Your profile information, as well as your name, email and photo, are displayed to people in the networks specified in your privacy settings to enable you to connect with people with a similar interest in your university on onedegree. onedegree may occasionally use your name and email address to send you notifications regarding new services offered by onedegree that it thinks you may find valuable.

Profile information is used by onedegree primarily to be presented back to and edited by you when you access the service and to be presented to others permitted to view that information by your privacy settings. In some cases where your privacy settings permit it (e.g., posting to your account), other onedegree.com users may be able to supplement your profile.

Profile information you submit to onedegree will be available to other users of onedegree.com who belong to at least one of the networks you allow to access the information through your privacy settings (e.g., alumni, school groups and events, fans, etc.). Your name, network name, and profile picture thumbnail will be available in search results across the onedegree networks for your university and those limited pieces of information may be made available to third party search engines. This is primarily so that people whom you have allowed to have access to your personal information and interests can find you and send an inquiry to you. People who see your name in searches, however, will not be able to access your profile information unless they have a relationship to you which you have acknowledged through your privacy settings.

onedegree may send you service-related announcements from time to time as part of the general operation of its website. For instance, if another registered user sends you a message or inquiry about your interest in some school event or program, you may receive an email alerting you that this has happened. onedegree may also send you such things as website or network operational announcements, Points Award Program messages and promotional messages relating to your school and its community.

onedegree may use information in your profile without identifying you as an individual to third parties. It does this for purposes such as aggregating how many people in a network are interested in particular university program or project and for personalizing advertisements and promotions. For example, if you put a favorite extracurricular activity or interest in your profile, onedegree might include you to view an advertisement highlighting an event or equipment relating to that activity or interest. But onedegree does not identify you specifically to the advertiser. onedegree also anonymously supplies generic information about its users collectively, such as education levels, income range, age, marital status, etc., to advertisers for the purpose of allowing them to decide whether to advertise their products or services on onedegree.com. This is a necessary part of onedegree’s business activities, since it derives revenue from them that allows it to maintain and improve onedegree.com.

onedegree may use information about you that it collects from other sources, including but not limited to newspapers and Internet sources such as blogs, instant messaging services and other users of onedegree.com to supplement your profile. Where such information is used, onedegree generally allows you to specify in your privacy settings that you do not want this to be done or to take other actions that limit the connection of this information to your profile (e.g., removing photo tag links).

Sharing Your Information with Third Parties

Using onedegree.com is about sharing information with others—people in your networks who share your love of your school and, even if not on campus, still want to fully participate in its activities and community—while providing you with privacy settings that restrict other users from accessing your information. onedegree allows you to choose the information you provide to other alumni, friends and family of your school through onedegree.com. onedegree’s network architecture and your privacy settings allow you to make informed choices about who has access to your information. onedegree shares your information with third parties only in limited circumstances where it believes such sharing is 1) reasonably necessary to offer a service, 2) legally required or, 3) permitted by you. For example:

  • Unlike most sites on the Web, onedegree prohibits access to personal information that you have restricted by third party search engine "crawlers" (e.g. Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask). onedegree takes action to block access by these engines to personal information beyond your name, profile picture, and limited data about your profile (e.g., your preferred university and related interests).
  • onedegree may provide information to service providers to help it bring you the services it offers. Specifically, it may use third parties to facilitate its business, such as to host the service at a co-location facility for servers, to send out email updates about onedegree or your university, to remove repetitive information from its user lists, to process redemption requests under onedegree’s Points Program for products or services, to offer an online job application process, or to provide search results or links (including sponsored links). In connection with these offerings and business operations, onedegree’s service providers may have access to your personal information for use for a limited time in connection with these business activities. Where onedegree utilizes third parties for the processing of any personal information, onedegree implements reasonable contractual and technical protections limiting the use of that information to the purposes specified by onedegree.
  • onedegree may be required to disclose user information pursuant to lawful requests, such as subpoenas or court orders, or in compliance with applicable laws. onedegree will not reveal information unless onedegree has a good faith belief that an information request by law enforcement or private litigants meets applicable legal standards. Additionally, onedegree may share account or other information when it believes it is necessary to comply with law, to protect its own interests or property, to prevent fraud or other illegal activity perpetrated through onedegree.com or using the onedegree name, or to prevent imminent bodily harm. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.
  • onedegree may offer redemption items or services under the onedegree Points Program jointly with other companies. onedegree alerts you when another company is involved in these activities.
  • Like many other websites that interact with third party sites, onedegree may receive some information even if you are logged out from onedegree.com, or that pertains to non-onedegree users, from such sites in conjunction with the technical operation of the system. In cases where onedegree receives information about users that are not logged in, or on non-onedegree users, onedegree does not attempt to associate it with individual onedegree accounts and will discard it.
  • If the ownership of all or substantially all of onedegree’s business, or individual business units owned by onedegree, were to change, your user information may be transferred to the new owner so the website and services provided by onedegree can continue. In any such transfer, your user information would remain subject to the promises made in onedegree’s pre-existing Privacy Policy.

When you useonedegree, certain information you post or share with third parties (e.g., fellow classmates, alumni, sports fans, etc.), such as personal information, comments, messages or other information, may be shared with other users in accordance with the privacy settings you select. All such sharing of information is done at your own risk. Please keep in mind that if you disclose personal information in your profile or when posting comments, messages, photos, videos, Marketplace listings or other items , this information may become publicly available.

Third Party Advertising

Advertisements that appear on onedegree.com are sometimes delivered (or "served") directly to users by third party advertisers. They automatically receive your IP address when this happens. These third party advertisers may also download cookies to your computer, or use other technologies such as JavaScript and "web beacons" (also known as "1x1 gifs") to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. Doing this allows the advertising network to recognize your computer each time they send you an advertisement in order to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. In this way, they may compile information about where individuals using your computer or browser saw their advertisements and determine which advertisements are clicked. onedegree does not have access to or control of the cookies that may be placed by the third party advertisers. Third party advertisers have no access to your contact information stored on onedegree.com unless you choose to share it with them.

This privacy policy covers the use of cookies by onedegree only and does not cover the use of cookies or other tracking technologies by any of its advertisers.
